The magnificent shops, stalls and eateries of Golborne

As the residents and businesses in Golborne Ward begin the process of emerging from the COVID-19 lockdown, we take a quick tour of some of the popular shops and stalls in the neighbourhood. Some of them have remained open through the lockdown providing essential services - so a heartfelt thanks to them. Others are just emerging from a three-month hibernation, and it's great to see them back. All of them need our support to get through these difficult times.

Rainbow News

Samadali Muradi is the man behind Rainbow News and he kept his shop at 63 Golborne Road open throughout lockdown. The store sells a wide range of groceries as well as magazines and newspapers - at one point it was one of the last shops in the area with both loo roll and tinned tomatoes! It's worth mentioning that Sam, as most know him, has taken the lease at second shop at 318a Ladbroke Grove which will be opening soon after refurbishment.

Falafel King

Falafel King opened its restaurant and takeaway at 95 Golborne Road not long before the lockdown kicked in, although they were previously trading on Portobello Road for many years. They've continued to operate a takeaway service. It's one of the tastiest and most keenly priced eating options in the neighbourhood. Highly recommended. Call 020 8968 4357 for the order and collect service.

Golborne Bistro & Deli

We're used to seeing pavement tables thronged with diners outside the Golborne Deli at 100 Golborne Road as well as lots of people inside but of course all that had to change with lockdown. Undeterred, the business reinvented itself with a range of foods to buy and a takeaway service from their menu. Plus they've been offering NHS staff 50% off any food item. A sterling performance.

Fruit and veg stall on Golborne Road

Golborne Road's fruit and veg stall was trading through the lockdown and as always was an excellent source of all kinds of healthy produce. The stall offers an excellent choice of all kinds of fruit and vegetables and the prices are well below those charged by the big supermarkets. And the sometimes hilarious banter from the stallholders comes at no extra charge. You'll find the stall outside 72-74 Golborne Road and check their Instagram account for details about home deliveries.

Golborne Fisheries

Golborne Fisheries at 75-77 Golborne Road was open through the lockdown continuing its long tradition of supplying people with excellent quality fish and seafood of all kinds. You'll struggle to find better quality - or prices - elsewhere. And the friendly knowledgeable fishmongers there are happy to gut and clean your fish, and to offer advice about cooking.

In the Garden

A very welcome return after a long lockdown absence is the In the Garden flower and plant stall. Mother and daughter duo Nikki and Holly are back every Friday and Saturday on Golborne Road, just on the corner of Golborne Road and Wornington Road. Lots of us have been cultivating our gardens, balconies and window boxes while under lockdown and now we can add to our displays from In the Garden's outstanding selection of plants.

Makan

Like all restaurants, Makan at Portobello Road just under the Westway had to close for sit-in service during the lockdown. But they've been providing a takeaway service and in fact you can order a delivery through Deliveroo. If you've never tried their delicious food, it's an authentic menu of freshly prepared food from Malaysia. There are lots of delicious noodle and rice dishes, and vegetarian options are available, all at very reasonable prices.
