Roger Mayne exhibition
Roger Mayne (1929 -2014) was a highly esteemed photographer who made many visits to Southam Street in Golborne, photographing life on the street there in the late 1950s and early 60s. Now, there’s a major exhibition of his work at the Photographer’s Gallery in Soho.
Southam Street is now a short stub off Golborne Road, and most of it was demolished in the late 60s to make way for Trellick Tower. Mayne’s photographs show not only a lost street, but a lost way of life in Golborne. Children play freely on the street, adults use it as an informal meeting place and there’s hardly a car to be seen.
The exhibition at the Photographers Gallery, the first major one of Mayne’s work since 1999, runs until June 11th.
