Breakfast in Golborne: six of the best

Twentieth century novelist and playwright W. Somerset Maugham said, ‘The only way to eat well in England is to have breakfast three times a day.’ That may or may not be true, but we’re certainly spoiled for choice in Golborne. Read about six of the best places to break your fast.

Café Bossa Nova

This Brazilian café and restaurant serves an excellent cup of coffee and choices include smoked salmon with scrambled egg, which was top class when I tried it. They also have a scrumptious selection of home baked cakes. The service was friendly and attentive, and according to my dining partner, the bathrooms were the smartest and cleanest she’d ever seen.

Casa D’Or

The freshly-squeezed orange juices here are perhaps the best to be had in Golborne. Breakfast fare includes a selection of pastries and their toasted sandwiches are a meal in themselves. I had a chicken escalope one, perhaps not a traditional breakfast choice, but a great way to start the day.

Café O’Porto

The Lisboa’s great rival also offers top class Portuguese coffees and has a few tricks of its own up its sleeve. Order a toasted cheese and ham croissant. This unlikely delicacy is made in a special kind of floppy croissant which is popped in the toaster, resulting in a satisfyingly substantial snack.

Golborne Deli

Expect a warm welcome from owner-managers Cristina and Gavin at this Italian-Australian crossover café; Gavin’s Australian, Cristina’s Italian. Breakfast delights here include bagels, the big brekkie which comes vegetarian or carnivorous, homemade baked beans and healthy yoghurts.

Golborne Restaurant

This is where you can get the real traditional cooked English breakfast beloved of builders throughout the UK. In this simply decorated café you can choose any combination of eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, tomatoes and chips that your heart desires.

Lisboa Patisserie

Now a much-loved Golborne Institution, here you’ll find superb milky coffee, (galão), served in a glass, delicious sticky buns and custard tarts (pastéis de nata) and some of the best pavement ambience in Golborne. Try a ham and chorizo pastry – a superb savoury start to the day.
