Restaurant review: El Camino Fresh Mexican Grill
Recently opened El Camino is tucked under the flyover on Portobello Road, across the road from the Westway tent. The menu includes nachos, tortillas, quesadillas, corn on the cob and deep-fried crispy-coated jalapeno chillies stuffed with cream cheese which come with the warning ‘SMOKING HOT! BE CAREFUL!’ All the food is freshly prepared and there is an authentic mesquite grill.
It’s great to see a place on Portobello Road that has a sane pricing policy. No one likes to see a businesses fold – somebody’s living is always at stake. But it’s hard to sympathise with some of the restaurants where a meal for two leaves little change from a hundred quid.
At El Camino, you can eat well for under a tenner – plus they have an ‘El Niños’ (children’s) section of the menu with items for as little as £2.
I went with my wife and children on a Spring evening so warm that we were able to sit outside and enjoy Portobello life as it passed us by. The interior has a lot of charm as well, with a collection of toys and memorabilia that give it a real Mexican cantina feel.
The kids had a mini meat taco and vegetarian quesadillas (each £2) both of which went down well. I had steak tacos (£4.95) which were beautifully fresh. As well as steak, the corn tacos were filled with salsa, guacamole, salad and sour cream.
El Camino is a welcome addition to Portobello Road and highly recommended.
