George's Portobello Fish Bar: Sad news

George Periccos, the man behind George’s Portobello Fish Bar, passed away peacefully on December 9th 2015. George arrived in London from Cyprus when he was 21 and set up the first George’s on Golborne Road in 1961 before opening the shop we know now at 329 Portobello Road.

George was a hugely popular figure in the area, and confirmation of that can be seen on the Portobello Fish Bar’s Facebook page where hundreds of well-wishers have left heartfelt messages of condolence.

Many people remember not only the superb food served up over the years at the restaurant but also George’s legendary generosity. Often, he'd slip some extra chips or titbits into an order, especially when he knew a customer wasn’t very well off.

In fact, George’s skills with the deep fryer made national and even international waves. Top chefs like Jamie Oliver and Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse gave his exemplary fish and chips the thumbs up.

A real local character, George will be sorely missed by his family and all that knew him.
