Golborne Road improvements: Consultation deadline extended to Friday 31st October
Kensington and Chelsea Council has launched a consultation exercise on plans to change the Golborne Road streetscape. Proposals, drawn up with the help of Golborne Forum, are intended to improve the street environment, upgrade lighting and tackle parking problems. Local residents and businesses are being invited to fill in a questionnaire about the proposals.
In the first phase of the project, improvements are proposed for the section of Golborne Road between Portobello Road and the recently refurbished railway bridge.
The three illustrations on this page show different options for the new lighting that is proposed for Golborne Road. Choosing the style of lighting is one of the options that the consultation is offering. Other options are concerned with narrowing the road to widen the pavements, moving some parking spaces and planting new trees.
"Architectural" lighting
Councillor Tim Coleridge, Cabinet Member for Planning Policy, Transport and Arts, said, "Golborne Road is a special street, it has a long history as a thriving market, and is home to many different communities. The Royal Borough has been working closely with local community groups to discuss how the road could be improved for local residents, visitors and market traders. We would all like to do so without in any way diminishing Golborne Road's special character.
"Please take the time to consider the options we are proposing, they would make the pavements wider, improve the experience of visitors to Golborne Road and enhance the streetscape. We want to hear from you which style you prefer."
"Traditional" lighting
Susie Parsons of the Golborne Forum said, "The Forum is very pleased to be working with the Council on improvements to Golborne Road. In particular, we are very keen to see more space for people to stroll up and down the market and for tables and chairs outside the restaurants and cafes, which add to the great atmosphere in the street.
"We have made sure that all three designs for the new lamp-posts will have space for banners to welcome visitors to Golborne – and I can’t wait to find out which design local people prefer!"
