Lunch al fresco in Golborne: five of the best

With the Met Office announcing that we’re 'odds on for a barbecue summer', Ken Macdonald went out in search of places to eat lunch al fresco around Golborne Road. Below are five places where you can enjoy your midday meal outside.

Moroccan Fish

If you like freshly cooked fish and seafood, Moroccan Fish has exactly what you want. There are tables next to the stall on Golborne Road, set opposite the Casa D’Or café. Grilled calamares (squid) and sea bass are a bargain £5 and the special fish tagine is £6.50. All cooked to order in front of you.

Thai Rice

It won’t come as a surprise to hear that Thai Rice, at 303 Portobello Road, serves food from Thailand. They have a lunchtime special at £5.50 which includes dishes like red curry, garlic chicken and pad Thai noodles. You can also sample Thai iced tea and fresh coconut milk.

Golborne Deli

Golborne Deli, at 100 Golborne Road, specialises in hearty Italian home cooking with dishes like lamb meatballs, pinenuts and sultanas with parmesan mash. They also offer salads, including warm goat cheese, red pesto and grilled vegetables. For a quicker snack, they have a range of toasted ciabattas with fillings like buffalo mozzarella, salami and red pesto.

George’s Portobello Fish Bar

George’s Portobello Fish Bar, a Golborne institution at 329 Portobello Road, has a couple of outdoor tables. And where else can you find that – al fresco fish and chips? Look out for their Fish Special – a piece of fish, chips and mushy peas, salad or beans, all for a recession-busting £4.50.

Baalbak Lebanese Cuisine

Baalbak Lebanese Cuisine at 91 Golborne Road is very much a cut above your traditional kebab shop. Their chicken or lamb shawarma has meat from the grill, salad, pickles and garlic or hot sauce to taste all wrapped in traditional flat bread – and its only £2.50. Other highly recommended delicacies include chicken livers, aubergine salad and stuffed vine leaves.
