More to eat on Golborne Road

Golborne Road has seen a rush of new restaurant openings this year, (two of them next to door to each other at numbers 93 and 95 Golborne Road), bringing Danish, Austrian and contemporary British cuisines to the neighbourhood.

Snaps + Rye

If you're a foodie, you'll have heard of Noma, the restaurant in Copenhagen that that has left food critics around the world grasping for superlatives. Now, you can sample authentic Danish fare at Snaps + Rye on Golborne Road, thanks to the fact that Kell and Jacqueline Skött decided to convert their hair salon into a restaurant. The restaurant has a Scandinavian, minimalist look with a mid-century feel and features white walls graphically overwritten with Danish food terms. Specialities include elaborate open sandwiches made with smørrebrød (rye bread) and featuring fillings like smoked eel with potato salad, watercress salad, mustard dressing and crisped ham. Enjoy the food with a cold glass of Tuborg beer from Denmark.

Kipferl

Occupying what was once the Moroccan Tagine, then a Papa John's Pizza outlet that fell foul of planning laws, Kipferl is the second branch of this Viennese café and restaurant, with the first in Camden Passage. The interior features lots of exposed brick and industrial light fittings, a quintessentially London 2015 look. But the food, and especially the cakes, come from a decidedly traditional Austrian culinary heritage. Go there for a slice of sachertort, a decadent but tempting confection that combines rich chocolate with sweet apricot jam, and an authentic Viennese coffee. You can also eat a full meal with choices like beetroot and goat cheese salad, hot sausage with sauerkraut and pickles, and Wiener schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberry sauce.

West Thirty Six

The Victorian Pub on the corner of Golborne Road and Southam Street, originally the Earl of Warwick, latterly Golborne House, Golborne Grove, Portobello Bridge and the Earl of Portobello, is now West Thirty Six. Describing itself as an all day townhouse, this restaurant and bar meanders through the old pub with various different rooms and milieus and includes a terrace overlooking the trains as they trundle along Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway. The atmosphere is akin to that of a laid-back club and you can expect contemporary British dishes like asparagus, purple watercress and crispy duck egg, aged rib eye burger with cheese and gherkins and citrus fruit tart with spiced coconut.
