New proposals will see the market canopy retained
Westway Trust: New development proposals
Following on from the Westway Trust’s initial proposals and consultation last year about redeveloping the flyover and surrounding land around Portobello Road, the Trust has published new proposals. Another round of consultation is now under way.
Recognising the opposition that the original proposals faced, the Trust has committed to keeping the existing market canopy and to only make changes that enhance the heritage of the area. There is to be no loss of stalls from the vintage market and all venues will be properly soundproofed. The Trust will seek to deliver affordable housing where possible and is inviting ideas for alternatives to the name ‘Portobello Village’.
The Trust’s new proposals include:
- New storage and toilet facilities for market traders
- New market space at Portobello Green Arcade
- New independent shops and workspaces
- New employment opportunities providing more jobs
- Additional public open space at Acklam Village
- More accessible open space at Portobello Green
- New flexible arts and community venues open all year round
- New homes
- Greater environmental sustainability
