Golborne Forum responds to Borough consultation
The Golborne Forum Board has responded to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s latest consultation document on the future of Golborne, Core Strategy and North Kensington plan: Towards preferred options
Here is a selection of the key points:
The Borough’s Core strategy asserted that Golborne Road catered for a ‘small local population’. The Forum pointed out that Golborne Road has in fact become a destination shopping street, especially at weekends.
The Forum also wants to see proposals to improve the Portobello Road Market north of Oxford Gardens, where the stalls peter out in the approach to Golborne Road. It called for more stalls, better promotion and electrical outlets.
Borough proposals to develop the entrance to Ladbroke Grove Underground Station as a gateway to Portobello Market via Thorpe Close and Oxford Gardens were welcomed. The Forum believes that this development will have a very positive impact on Golborne and its market and should be made a priority.
There was concern that the plans for the development of the site of the recently demolished Edenham Care Home on Elkstone Road did not include any facilities for elderly people. This was despite the fact that the Core strategy identified this as a local need.
The Forum also stressed that proposals for the demolition and redevelopment of the Wornington Green estate should be seen as part of a wider development plan for the surrounding area. The plans must recognise the impact on residents, traders, businesses and visitors.
The Forum welcomed the possible development of a new secondary school in North Kensington – ideally, it would be a maintained community school with playing fields attached.
