Westway Trust development plans for Portobello
Westway Trust has started initial consultation on their development plans for the area at the junction of Portobello Road and the Westway, including Acklam Village, Portobello Green, Portobello Green Arcade and Acklam Road car park. The development is titled Portobello Village and plans outline proposals to:
- replace the canopy on the Cambridge Gardens and Portobello Road junction with a building which will include market stalls, shops, studios and a rooftop garden.
- refurbish the shops in Portobello Green Arcade
- build shops and studios in the bays currently occupied by the Pop-up Cinema and Acklam Village
- build private housing on the car park opposite the Acklam Village/Pop-up Cinema bays.
The redevelopment is intended to attract new visitors to the area, discourage anti-social behaviour, create a nicer environment, create employment and training opportunities for local people, and increase arts and cultural event space.
There has been some local concern about the plans with more than 14,000 people signing a petition on the
38Degrees website opposing the development. The Trust has responded to these concerns with a
frequently asked questions page on its website. Golborne Forum, the local neighbourhood forum and publishers of Golborne Life, has not yet had time to fully consider the developments, but
will be doing so.
Next steps
The Trust plan to take feedback about the proposals into consideration in creating an updated design proposal. There will be continuing consultation and a public exhibition in the summer. The Trust will apply to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea for planning permission in the summer and the outcome of the planning permission is expected later in the year.
