Portobello Wall Arts Project
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has launched a new arts programme in Golborne called The Portobello Wall Arts Project. Artworks will be displayed along Portobello Road between Cambridge Gardens and Golborne Road.
The first artist, on display now, is Hew Locke with a series of works entitled ‘Shares’. The Portobello Wall project aims to create a visual link between Portobello Market and Golborne Markets to encourage people to visit Golborne.
The work consists of giant share certificates with additions by the artist and will be displayed until June 26th. London-based Locke has shown work at the Tate, Brooklyn Museum, British Museum and the Henry Moore Foundation.
Describing his work Hew Locke says, ‘The company certificates I have chosen include some with instantly resonant names, on other occasions I just respond aesthetically to the sheer visual beauty of the certificates, contrasted with the unforgiving nature of business.’
A series of artists will be displayed on the Portobello Wall over the next year.
