Artist Junior Tomlin with children from Ark Brunel Primary Academy
New mural at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance
A colourful mural was recently unveiled at the newly refurbished children's playground in
Emslie Horniman's Pleasance. Titled "Children are our Rising Stars" the artwork was created
by local artist Junior Tomlin with the help of children from nearby Ark Brunel Primary Academy.
Commissioned by Kensington and Chelsea Council in collaboration with Kensington and Chelsea arts week the mural is based on elements of the environment, and encapsulates historical and social aspects of the area. Community workshops contributed to the artwork.
Junior Tomlin said, "Every child is a star - they are a constant reminder of where we all
started. I wanted to show that in the mural - there are lots of stars and they are the
children. In addition, I included musical symbols to reference the rich cultural heritage
of our community.
"I invited the children from Ark Brunel to add their handprints to the final mural
painting," Junior added. "The children were forever ready to answer questions in class,
so their hands were important to the design. I also used elements of their drawings from the
workshops which referred to kindness and sharing."
