End of an Era: George's chippie to close
Much-loved local chippie George's Portobello Fish Bar has announced that it is to close its doors for the final time on Saturday July 20th, 2024. This unwelcome news comes 63 years after George's first served fish and chips to hungry Golborne residents in 1961.
The founder of the popular take-away was George Periccos, originally from Cyprus but a resident of London since he arrived in the city at the age of 21.
He passed away in 2015 but family members, including his daughter Noni, carried on serving everything from kebabs to battered sausages and from hamburgers to fried fish and spare ribs.
In an interview with the
MyLondon website, Noni reminisced about George's over the years. “I've seen people grow up here and then have their children come in. My dad would always go out of his way to help people when he was alive. If somebody came in and didn't have enough money for chips, he'd usually give it to them for free. I grew up in here and I've tried to keep his legacy going and people always say how much they love us so that's always good to see."
"It was a tough decision deciding to close," Noni continued. "When we first announced it, it was a hard pill to swallow. I shed a lot of tears. It's going to be sold as an empty property so we're not sure what it will be once we go but it most likely won't be a fish and chips shop anymore."
So if you want some of the delicious food served at George's, don't leave it too long!
