Dave Pitt and Tina Alkaff are the hosts at one of Golborne's friendliest venues, the Inn on the Green, a performance centre, art gallery and restaurant above the Portobello Green Fitness Centre on Thorpe Close. They have transformed it into a welcoming place where you can relax with a drink or a coffee, watch some excellent live music and comedy or eat some of the delicious food prepared by chef Shonagh.
Both Dave and Tina were formerly involved in youth and community work and between them they've accumulated some sixty years of local knowledge. Before they took over at the Inn, they ran the Westway Sports bar for a couple of years.Tina says: "This is what Dave and I have always wanted - to run a performance and arts space for local people. We've got comedian Tony Allen nurturing new young talent, we're putting on live music that you won't hear in most venues and we feel we're really serving our local community.
Dave and Tina are keen to see the wider community using the Inn and a range of community groups have already used the space for meetings and activities. The Inn is also very child-friendly - there's plenty of space for the little ones to run around and the often snotty welcome that parents have come to expect from English pubs and restaurants is completely absent. Plus the venue is no smoking.
And there's even good news for the hopeless addicts among us - there is an outdoor balcony overlooking Portobello Green where you can have a fag without worrying about your smoke bothering anyone else.
The venue also has exhibition space which shows local artists and photographers in an informal setting À if you're looking for something original and unique to brighten up your home, this is the place to go.
Marco and Eric run the kitchen at the Inn, offering an eclectic international menu with a strong Brazilian influence. Lunch and evening meals are available daily and they can also provide catering for events.
