The female blackbird laid four eggs in this very late nest in July. Given the unusual timing, perhaps not surprisingly but still disappointingly, the female abandoned the nest about 10 days after this picture was taken, before the eggs had hatched. Failed nesting attempts are far from unusual for most bird species.
